Why See a Prosthodontist?
Prosthodontics is one of the ten dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. Prosthodontists are specialists in the restoration and replacement of missing teeth and oral structures with natural, esthetic, and functional replacements.
Becoming a prosthodontist requires an additional three years of specialty training after obtaining a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) or DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree. These additional three years involves intensive training and comprehensive experience in many treatment modalities. This includes surgical implant placement, the simple to most complex implant supported restorations, laboratory and clinical training in esthetics/cosmetics, crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays, removable complete and partial dentures, and dental implants. All of this gives prosthodontists a unique understanding of restoring the dynamics of a smile and healthy mouth.
The term “prostho” means replacement and “dontist” means dealing with teeth. Essentially, prosthodontists are recognized experts when anything needs to be replaced in your mouth. This can range from a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all teeth and gums in the mouth. Prosthodontists are considered the leaders of the dental treatment plan and often referred to the quarterback or architect of complex treatment plans. They regularly lead teams of specialists and other health professionals to develop solutions for your dental needs.
This extensive training gives prosthodontists the additional skills needed to treating complex dental conditions and restoring optimum function and esthetics.
